Abstract
Introduction. According to the World Health Organization, the burden of mental disorders is steadily increasing, with significant health and socioeconomic impacts worldwide. People living with psychosis often face challenges in daily functioning, employment, and social interactions, which frequently leads them to live with their families. In this context, informal caregivers play a crucial role in supporting the therapeutic and rehabilitative process. The aim of this study is to explore and map the current literature on home-based educational strategies for informal caregivers of people with psychosis.
Materials and Methods. A scoping review was conducted following Arksey and O’Malley’s framework and the PCC approach. Searches were performed in major biomedical databases between April and June 2024. Eligible studies involved caregivers of individuals with psychosis, were written in English, Spanish, or French, and reported nurse-led educational interventions, outcomes, or experiences related to mental health care. Screening and analysis were independently performed by two reviewers.
Results. Educational strategies targeting caregivers offer significant clinical and health benefits for individuals with psychosis, including reduced relapse rates and disability, improved treatment adherence, greater knowledge, and enhanced quality of life. Caregivers who often experience knowledge gaps benefit from educational interventions that support skill development, alleviate caregiver burden, and promote their own well-being. Key facilitators of these interventions include the use of supportive materials, a calm and respectful environment, active listening, a transcultural approach, and clearly defined strategies. Major barriers include stigma, misinformation, and financial hardship experienced by families.
Discussion. Through health education, nurses play a key role in enhancing the health and well-being of the entire family unit. Raising community awareness and promoting health promotion and disease prevention initiatives are essential strategies to reduce morbidity and mortality rates.
