NEU is a peer-reviewed, open-access scientific journal devoted to nursing sciences in the field of neurosciences. The journal promotes the exchange and application of scientific evidence in nursing practice, with particular attention to evidence-based nursing interventions and patient-centred care.
The journal aims to improve clinical outcomes, patient safety, quality of life, and the organization of neuroscience nursing care by publishing rigorous, transparent, and clinically relevant contributions. Its close connection with nursing professionals directly involved in patient care supports the publication of research that is clinically relevant and practice-oriented.
The scope of NEU includes general, clinical, and pediatric nursing sciences applied to neurology, neurosurgery, neurorehabilitation, and psychiatry. The journal welcomes research and scholarly work on nursing care concerning:
- acute and chronic neurological conditions;
- stroke and other cerebrovascular conditions;
- traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury;
- epilepsy and other seizure disorders;
- neurodegenerative conditions and associated care needs;
- neurosurgical conditions, perioperative care, and postoperative recovery;
- neurocritical care and neurological and neurosurgical emergencies;
- neurorehabilitation, functional recovery, disability, and long-term care needs;
- pediatric neurological and neurosurgical conditions;
- psychiatric and mental health conditions.
The journal also publishes research on:
- nursing assessment, care planning, evidence-based interventions, and outcome evaluation in neuroscience care;
- patient safety and the prevention and management of complications in neurological, neurosurgical, neurorehabilitation, and psychiatric settings;
- pain, symptom management, quality of life, and patient-reported outcomes;
- mobility, cognition, communication, swallowing, nutrition, and support for self-care;
- patient and caregiver involvement, shared decision-making, health education, and support needs;
- rehabilitation, discharge planning, continuity of care, and coordination between hospital, community, and long-term care services;
- nursing education, professional competencies, advanced practice, and professional development;
- healthcare organization, multidisciplinary care pathways, implementation of evidence, clinical projects, professional innovations, and field experiences;
- digital health, telemedicine, artificial intelligence, remote monitoring, and other technologies relevant to neuroscience nursing;
- development and validation of measurement instruments, clinical tools, prediction models, and research methodologies relevant to neuroscience nursing.
NEU values interdisciplinary collaboration and welcomes contributions developed in cooperation with professionals in neurology, neurosurgery, rehabilitation, psychiatry, pediatrics, psychology, medicine, and other disciplines involved in neuroscience care, provided that the nursing perspective and its specific contribution to clinical practice are clearly defined.
The journal publishes Original Scientific Research, Quality Improvement Reports, Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, Narrative, Integrative, Rapid and Scoping Reviews, Case Reports and Case Series, Study Protocols, Brief Reports, Procedure Updates, Editorials, Commentaries, Letters to the Editor, Cultural and Educational Articles, and clearly identified Conference Abstracts.
Research articles and other scholarly submissions designated as peer reviewed undergo double-anonymous external peer review by at least two independent reviewers with appropriate expertise. Editorials, Commentaries, Letters to the Editor, Conference Abstracts, and other specified non-research content may undergo editorial or Scientific Committee review instead. The review status of each article type is clearly identified in the journal’s policies.
The journal welcomes appropriately designed quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, methodological, translational, clinical, educational, organizational, and implementation research relevant to neuroscience nursing. Manuscripts should use methods suited to the research question and comply with applicable ethical requirements and recognized reporting guidelines.
Studies involving commercial products, medical devices, software, or proprietary technologies are considered when they address a relevant scientific or clinical question, report methods and outcomes transparently, and fully disclose funding, material support, and potential conflicts of interest. Promotional or unsupported commercial claims are not accepted.
NEU is intended for nurses, healthcare professionals, researchers, educators, healthcare managers, policymakers, scientific societies, patients’ and caregivers’ representatives, and other stakeholders involved in neuroscience care.
