The Use of Acupuncture for the Treatment of Depression and Anxiety in Individuals Affected by Ischemic Stroke: A Literature Review

Abstract

Introduction. Stroke is one of the leading cerebrovascular diseases and entails significant physical, psychological, and emotional consequences. Among the most common complications is post-stroke depression, a condition that impairs functional and cognitive recovery, reduces quality of life, and increases the risk of mortality. The aim of this review was to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture as a non-pharmacological intervention in preventing or reducing depression and anxiety following ischemic stroke.

Materials and Methods. A literature review was conducted through searches of PubMed and CINAHL. Studies published between 2014 and 2024 examining acupuncture for post-stroke depression and anxiety were considered, with particular attention to systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, and meta-analyses comparing acupuncture with conventional pharmacological treatment or no treatment.

Results. Available literature indicates that acupuncture may be effective in the treatment of post-stroke depression and anxiety and may also promote functional recovery through modulation of neurological, hemodynamic, and metabolic mechanisms. Compared with antidepressant therapy, acupuncture was associated with a favorable safety profile, with mainly mild and transient adverse effects. The availability of different acupuncture techniques may also increase its clinical adaptability.

Discussion. The systemic effects of acupuncture suggest that it may represent a promising complementary option in post-stroke rehabilitation. Appropriately trained nurses may contribute to patient assessment, education, monitoring, and integration of complementary approaches within multidisciplinary care pathways. Further research, shared clinical guidance, and a clear regulatory framework are needed before broader implementation in nursing practice.
