Abstract

Background. Orthorexia nervosa (ON) consists of a pathological obsession with eating foods and food products that are considered healthy that leads to following a restrictive diet and a harmful focus on the quality of these products and their origin. The purpose of the study is to assess the prevalence of ON risk and to identify possible factors that may predispose to it in the nursing staff. Material and methods. The study was conducted in Poland between december 2019 and march 2020 using questionary: ORTO-15. Data was collected using a two-section self-administered questionnaire. The first section contained demographic data, the second part was the Polish version of the Orto-15. Results. The study included 181 participants. The median age was 42 years (SD = 11.1), and the BMI was 24.8 (SD = 5.1). In the study group, 40.9% of the subjects were at ON risk. Those at risk of ON had lower BMIs (24.9 vs 24.2 kg/m2, p = 0.505). 42% of Facebook users were at risk of ON (p = 0.362). There were no statistically significant differences in ON risk and type of diet. Conclusions. In the study group, over 40% of respondents were at risk of orthorexia nervosa. Among the nursing staff, no statistically significant differences were found between BMI value, type of diet, use of social networks, and the risk of orthorexia nervosa.
