Abstract

Background. Poor nourishment and low body weight adversely affect quality of life and prognosis in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and constitute an independent risk factor for respiratory-related death. Objectives. Assess the nutritional status of a COPD patient and the related nursing care issues. Material and methods. the studied case is a 60-year old male admitted to the Internal Medicine Unit of the independent public hospital in Bielsk Podlaski, Poland, due to a COPD exacerbation. Data was collected by means of observation and nursing health history. The analysis of the patient’s medical records included his medical history, individual medical order sheet, temperature chart, laboratory results and other test results. The patient’s nutritional status was evaluated using standardized measurement scales: SGA and NRS. Results. At admission, the patient experienced dyspnea at rest, related to the COPD exacerbation. The patient was at increased risk of complications from long-term immobility. Other findings included productive coughing due to bronchial inflammation, intermittently persistent swelling of the feet, and a moderate degree of malnutrition. Conclusions. 1. Early diagnosis of eating disorders using standardized scales or instruments and malnutrition prevention are important aspects of nursing care for COPD patients. 2. COPD patients should be encouraged to actively participate in their treatment and prevention of negative outcomes.
