Abstract

Background. Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder which causes high social costs. On psychiatric wards there are patients who need complex medical and therapeutical care. Objectives. The aim of the paper is to present the individual nursing plan of the female patient who was hospitalized repeatedly for paranoid schizophrenia. Material and methods. The subject was a 69-year-old female patient who was put on the psychiatric ward as a consequence of aggressive behaviour caused by auditory hallucinations. The data concerning the mental state of the patient was based on the interviews with nurses, the patient herself, observations, and also the medical records and information taken from the therapeutical staff. Results. The patient’s aggressive behaviour and auditory hallucinations disappeared during the hospitalization. Thanks to the complex care, the patient’s bio-psycho-social needs were fulfilled. The outstanding attention was put on developing her verbal communication abilities, and also increasing the patient’s awareness concerning the diagnosed disorders. Conclusions. 1. A nurse with a therapeutical staff should diagnose the patient’s bio-psycho-social needs, and consequently try to achieve the expected effects after implementing nursing intervention. 2. A very important role of a nurse is also to control the blood glucose level and to motivate the patient to follow a diet because of the type 2 diabetes.
