Abstract

Background. Excessive activation of vagus nerve may lead to syncope and snoring. Objectives. The aim of the study is evaluation whether snoring is connected with occurrence of syncopes among people from general population. Material and methods. The group of respondents consisted of 98 people aged 40.1 ± 15.7 (including 47 women and 51 men). The respondents were randomly selected from the authors’ friends and family members. They were asked to fill in a survey form concerning occurrence of snoring, excessive somnolence, risk factors of cardiovascular system diseases, syncopes and Epworth Sleepiness Scale. Results. Occurrence of at least one full loss awareness in lifetime was mentioned by 36.7% of the respondents, occurrence of snoring by 55 people (56.1%) including 18 women (38.3%) and 37 men (72.8%). Among 36 people who state that they have snored at least once in their lifetime 26 have experienced at least one incident of syncope (72.2%) whereas among 62 people who do not snore, such a dependence was given by 29 people (46.8%), p = 0.14, p < 0.05. In case when the respondent has noticed he snores, the risk of syncope increases in history by 3.2 times; 95% confidence interval was 1.3–7.3 times, p = 0.008, p < 0.01. Conclusions. 1. Snoring is a frequent phenomenon among general population. 2. People with occurrence of snoring have had syncopes in their medical history more often indeed. 3. Determining characteristics of relations between syncopes and snoring requires performing further research.
