Abstract

Heart failure (HF) and frailty are both prevalent conditions among the elderly, often coexisting and significantly complicating patient management. This review explores the special needs of patients with both heart failure and frailty, emphasizing the unique clinical challenges posed by this dual burden. Frailty exacerbates the symptoms of heart failure, contributing to poorer outcomes, including increased mortality, frequent hospitalizations, and diminished quality of life. The review discusses the pathophysiology of both conditions, diagnostic considerations, and highlights the importance of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to care. Management strategies must address both the cardiovascular and functional aspects of these patients’ health, integrating pharmacologic treatments, rehabilitation, and psychosocial support. The review also emphasizes the need for early detection of frailty and the implementation of geriatric principles in heart failure management. A holistic approach that combines cardiology and geriatrics is essential for improving the prognosis and quality of life in this vulnerable population. Future research should focus on tailoring interventions for frail heart failure patients to optimize their outcomes.
