Abstract
Background. This study aimed to explore the effect of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) ISO 9001 standard and the European foundation for quality management (EFQM) model on improving hospital performance. Objectives. This study was designed to assess the impact of the international standard ISO 9001 and the Model of the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) to improve earnings in the hospital. Material and methods. PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library databases were searched. In addition, Elsevier and Springer searched as major publishers in the field of medical sciences. They were included in empirical studies of each project, which uses the ISO 9001 or EFQM model to improve quality of care. Data were collected and compiled data extraction sheet, which has been specially designed for this study. The data collected included the names of authors, country, year of publication, intervention, aims to improve, setting the length of the program, the study design and results. Results. Seven of the 125 studies, which were taken met the inclusion criteria. Three studies examined the use of the EFQM model and in four studies examined the use of ISO 9001. By applying the EFQM model has increased the degree of patient satisfaction and decreased average length of stay has shortened the average waiting time for admission to the surgical wards and reduced the number of emergency readmissions. Application of the standard ISO 9001 also contributed to the increase in the degree of patient satisfaction and patient safety also has been observed to increase cost efficiency, process improvement admissions to hospital, and to reduce the percentage of unplanned readmission. Conclusions. Generally, there is no hard and high-quality empirical evidence on the impact of ISO 9001 and the EFQM model to deliver the high-quality care hospitals. However, limited evidence shows that ISO 9001 and the EFQM model can improve the efficiency in the hospital.References
