Abstract

Background. Increasingly, postgraduate and postgraduate education for future health professionals is increasingly being developed using distance learning techniques, such as e-learning, that enables the use of a variety of multimedia forms, authentic descriptions and practical learning of searching and using evidence as a basis for Evidence-Based Practice as a standard in teaching medical specialists. Objectives. The analysis of effectiveness of student learning using an e-learning course on the MoodleTM platform in the field of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) among Midwifery students at the Medical University of Warsaw (MUW). Material and methods. 49 students (100% women) of the first year of non-stationary Master’s Midwifery studies at the MUW; average age 25.75 years (min – 22, max – 52, median – 23, SD ± 7.68). The effectiveness indicator was a comparison between students’ knowledge and attitudes with EBP2Q questionnaire before and after the course with Wilcoxon matched-pairs test (STATISTICA ver. 12.5, license MUW; level of statistical significance α < 0.05). Results. The analysis of the each subscale of the questionnaire used to examine students before and after online education revealed that 5 out of 6 subscales showed an increase in the level of knowledge and skills after an e-learning course on MoodleTM. Significant differences were found in 46 out of 74 statements. The subscale connected with the terminology related to scientific research, statistically significant differences were observed in all statements and there the observed effect of applied educational intervention was the highest. Conclusions. 1. E-learning structured EBP course is an effective teaching methods of the MUW students. 2. The benefits of an e-learning approach need to be considered when planning content of education at the MUW as it allows standardization of teaching materials. 3. The aim of objectivization of the results is to continue research in a larger and more diversed population of health professionals in Poland.
