Abstract

Background. As an important part of interpersonal skills, assertiveness is crucial for effective problem-solving. Since the midwifery profession involves intense interaction between therapeutic team members, it is necessary to be assertive in order to be able to defend your own dignity as well as to express views and emotions with respect for others. An assertive midwife is self-confident, able to meet their goals and, in the case of conflict, focused on the problem searching for a suitable and mutually satisfactory solution. Objectives. The study aimed to assess assertive problem-solving skills of midwives employed in selected hospitals of the Mazowieckie, Podlaskie, Warmian-Masurian and Lubelskie Voivodeships. Material. The study involved a total of 153 midwives (women: 100%) working in six healthcare entities in Central and Eastern Poland. Mean age: 46.84 years (SD: 12.44; min: 24 years; max: 61 years; median: 50; mode: 52). Most study participants (n = 92; 60%) had secondary medical education, 20% (32 persons) had completed first-cycle programmes, and 19% (n = 30) – second-cycle programmes. Mean job tenure amounted to 24.56 years (SD: 10.16 years; min: 0.5 years; max: 39 years; median: 27; mode: 28). A vast majority of the study participants worked full-time (n = 150; 98%). A questionnaire return rate was 74% (153/204). Methods. A voluntary and anonymous questionnaire study carried out with the use of a standardised questionnaire: Midwives’ Social Competence Questionnaire (MSCQ) developed by Tomala and Jaworski. The MSCQ questionnaire comprised a total of 26 statements rated on a fivepoint Likert scale. In addition, it included nine questions on sociodemographic data of the respondents participating in the study: gender, age (year of birth), marital status, place of permanent residence, type of school, education level, job tenure, form of employment, and occupational position. Results. Analysis of Subscale II Assertiveness in situations of conflict, comprising five questions, demonstrated that nurses were highly assertive in problem-solving. As many as 127 midwives scored within the top range of points (19–25 points). Only two midwives out of 153 participating in the study scored within the lowest range of points (7–12 points), while the remaining respondents obtained scores within the middle range of scores (13–18 points). Conclusions. 1. Midwives participating in the study had strong assertive problem-solving and conflict-solving skills. 2. No correlations were found between the level of assertiveness and age, education level, marital status, place of residence, and job tenure. 3. Assertiveness of medical personnel contributes to the maintenance of good relationships between therapeutic team members as well as between them and patients. 4. Trainings and workshops aiming to improve communication skills seems necessary to maintain healthy relationships and prevent burnout.
