Abstract
Background. Each year the number of patients with chronic kidney disease is increasing. It is estimated that almost 600 million people in the world suffer from chronic kidney disease, including 4 million in Poland. The report on the condition of renal replacement therapy in Poland from 2006, shows that at the end of the year 2006, 361 patients in a million were dialyzed. These figures are worrying and show that we need to take a closer look at the process of hemodialysis and refine it so that com plications can be reduced to a minimum, and thus improve the quality of life in patients on dialysis. Objectives. Examine the degree of platelet activation and aggregation in blood from different stages of the hemodialysis process in sheep. Material and methods. In the experiment we examined the blood from sheep with kidneys which underwent hemodialysis. The blood was collected at different stages of hemodialysis, and then tested using two agonists: ADP and collagen. The measurements were performed using the impedance aggregometry. Results and conclusion. It was observed that, for both ADP and collagen, loss of activity of platelets occured after 15 minutes from the start of dialys is. This is probably the time when the platelets were activated and could not react with the agonist, but the organism have not yet supplied fresh platelets to the blood stream. Then, the discharge of fresh platelets occured and replenished those that have been activated, so that as shown at the end of dialysis, the activity remains constant. In addition, by comparing the results for two agonists, it can be seen that the platelets respond better with ADP than collagen.References
