Abstract

Diabetes mellitus type 1 (DM T1) is a chronic, metabolic disease resulting from progressive damage of beta cells of pancreatic islets. Over 200 thousand people suffer from DM T1 in Poland, out of whom 15 thousand are schoolchildren. Pupils affected by the disease require additional special care. In order to coordinate activities aiming for improvement of the care, every school should introduce a comprehensive care plan for children affected by DM T1. Unfortunately, among publications released in Poland, no indicators of definite, practical solutions to problematic situations can be found, nor examples of such cases, nor responsibilities of school staff taking care of pupils with DM T1.
