Abstract
Parkinson’s disease is a condition of the nervous system. In Poland, it affects about 70.000 people, mostly over 65 years old. The prevalence in the general population is about 0.15%, and in people over 70 years is 10 times higher. Contemporary medicine has access to medications that may delay the occurrence of severe disease symptoms for a few years. The selection of pharmacological treatment in a particular patient depends on the age, the severity of the disease, its clinical appearance and other comorbidities. The role of nurses in the care of patients with Parkinson’s disease is to assist in establishing contact with the environment through the use of supportive methods. A nurse cooperating with a psychologist, an occupational therapist and a physiotherapist exerts positive influence on the mental condition and motor coordination of the patient. In contrast, through education and providing professional support to patients with Parkinson’s disease and their families, a nurse contributes to higher independence of the patient and at the same time prepares the family to take proper care for the sick. The aim of the study was to present the role and responsibilities of nurses in the care of a patient with Parkinson’s disease.References
