Abstract
Background. The first skin-to-skin contact (STS) consists of placing a naked newborn immediately after birth, before the umbilical cord is cut, on the mother’s naked breast. Although skin to skin contact has many benefits for both mother and child, as has been proven in many medical tests, it is still underestimated, overlooked or misdiagnosed. Objectives. The aim of the study was to analyze the reasons for abandoning and delaying the first contact between mother and child immediately after giving birth to women at Hospital name’s St. Zofia in Warsaw in 2017. Material and methods. The research material was 7036 births that took place from the beginning of January to the end of December 2017 at the Hospital St. Zofia in Warsaw. A retrospective analysis of the data of mothers and children who did not have their first contact immediately after delivery was performed. The gestational age, delivery route, intra-abdominal complications, and the child’s condition were taken into account. Results. The average age was 33 years. The most numerous group were women between 31 and 35 years old. The multi-fertile pregnancies accounted for 3.7%. Most births, as much as 87.3% took place on time. 89% was an operating delivery. The most frequent cause of delay in the first contact was surgical delivery – 41%. Conclusions. Most children experience skin-to-skin contact after childbirth. Among children who did not have skin-to-skin contact, the majority were full-term children, separated by an operative delivery route.References
