Abstract

Background. Nowadays, the Internet is one of the most fundamental sources of information. Modern parents, especially women use the Internet to gain knowledge in the fields of pregnancy, labor, puerperium, taking care of newborns. Using various websites, parents are also able to ask not only support groups but also specialists and midwives. Objectives. The aim of this study was to assess using the Internet, including various websites, to gain information about the pregnancy, labor, puerperium and taking care of newborns in the group of parents who have children or are expecting. Material and methods. The study has been conducted with the diagnostic poll method on a group of 666 respondents. The comparison of the quantitative variables between groups (women without children vs women with children) has been done using the chi-square test (χ2). Results. Analysis of the results shows, that 79.1% of respondents have been looking for advice or diagnosis using the Internet. The group of people who do not have children prefer to look for advice/diagnosis on internet forums. However, people who have children prefers social media sites. Statistics of both cases are important (p = 0.0072; p < 0.0001). According to the respondents, the most frequent were issues connected with pregnancy (63.3%), including the so-called alarming symptoms (62.9%). Puerperium was the least frequent issue (12.2%). The issues about the birth were i.a. signs and symptoms of labor and the time parents should go to the hospital. The most popular issues with puerperium were: the diet for breastfeeding mothers (52.1%), the amount of food (47.7%), family midwife (29.3%) and the removal of stitches (29,1%). The study has also shown results for skin lesion (53.4%), vaccination (44.5%) and body care preparations (34.5%) Conclusions. Using the Internet, especially professional websites to get advice and/or diagnosis is the preferred method in the group of respondents. Fertility of a woman determined, statistically, the choice of online forums and social media websites to receive particular information. Particular health needs set the topic of what issues people are looking to solve online in the aspect of fertility in the group of respondents. Alarming symptoms during pregnancy are the base to look for help in the Internet, no matter the fertility of a mother, multi-faceted childbirth, however, is common mostly in the group of women who have experience in such field. Lactation and issues with infant care, especially the skin, are very important aspects of puerperium and set the activity of women, mainly in the group of women who have children.
