Abstract

Background. The specificity of intensive care unit (ICU) is based on multi-profile and combining multi-disciplinary knowledge of medicine. ‘The organization, methods of treatment and matched used equipment and procedures to save the lives of patients. Also noteworthy is the specific microflora of Intensive Care, characterized by the presence of strains resistant to multiple antibiotics. It is beyond the state of the patients and used methods of treatment, and monitoring another predisposing factor for infection in hospitalized. Objectives. The aim of study was to show the frequency of catheter- -related infections in the Intensive Care Unit and an indication of pathogens that contribute to development of infections, as well as the characteristics of the factors dependent and independent of the patient, which may predispose to catheter-related infection. Methods. The study had a retrospective. The study included 100 medical documentations of patients hospitalized in the ICU. The study used a questionnaire of his own authorship, consisting of questions relating to the condition of the patient, the mode of admission to the unit, and the type of microbiological agents and care of the injection site. The development was based on the results of the statistical analysis measurable characteristics (quantitative) and statistical analysis unmeasured characteristics (qualitative) Results. The study showed that catheter-related infections are often vulnerable older people aged over 60 years. Analysis of the results also showed that the mode of adoption: a sudden out of the operating theater and emergency department of another predispose the patient to develop an infection. Also, a long hospital stay and time of holding the catheter in the vessel affect the formation of infection, Conclusions. The determinant factors rise catheter-related infections in intensive care patients are older age, mode of admission to the unit, a long hospital stay and hold the catheter in the vessel. One of the major pathogens responsible for infections is Staphylococcus aureus.
