Abstract

Background. Heart failure, despite significant progress in treatment procedures, is a growing health and social problem in the developed countries of America and Europe. Currently, a major advance in the treatment of acute coronary events, especially heart attacks, the progress of invasive cardiology and good pharmacotherapy contributed to a significant reduction in the number of deaths and at the same time to longer life of patients. Objectives. To assess factors affecting the coherence level in patients with heart failure and to determine the dependence between coherence and quality of life in the above patients. Material and methods. The study was conducted among 114 patients with heart failure treated at the Department of Cardiology. A diagnostic survey method was used in the study with other research tools, i.e. author’s questionnaire and standardized scales: Life Orientation Test and WHOQoL-BREF Quality of Life Questionnaire. The results were analyzed statistically. Results. The analysis of the study material showed that 34% of respondents are characterized by a low sense of coherence and 66% by a high sense of coherence. Married persons (p = 0.047) and those living with the family (p = 0.021) are more likely to have a high sense of coherence. On the other hand, patients whose coronary artery disease (p = 0.024) or hypertension are the cause of heart failure are more often characterized by a low sense of coherence. The level of coherence significantly positively affects the quality of life in patients with heart failure. Conclusions. Quality of life in patients with high levels of coherence (optimists) is significantly higher than the quality of life in patients with low coherence (pessimists).
