Abstract

The increasing incidence of cardiovascular disease, especially circulatory insufficiency, and the related increases in treatment costs necessitate the optimization of care for cardiovascular patients. One suggested solution is the introduction of holistic care, whereby the patient is not only the receiver of medical care, but also an active participant of the treatment process. This requires the development of patients’ health awareness through relevant educational efforts. It has also been stated that education is the most effective if it is directed towards promoting self-care. In the case of patients with circulatory insufficiency, the notion of self-care comprises the proper dosage of prescribed medicines, lifestyle changes including appropriate diet and exercise, and the ability to identify and respond to early symptoms of decompensation. The paper presents research instruments for evaluating self-care in patients with heart failure.
