Abstract

Background. Heart failure (HF) applies to almost 2% of the European population and is considered the epidemic of the XXI century. Despite advances in medicine HF is an important clinical problem and socioeconomical because it is linked with increasing prevalence, high costs of treatment and hospitalization and poor prognosis. Objectives. The aim of the study was to show an influence of the NYHA scale and acceptance of illness on quality of life in chronic heart failure. Material and methods. The study included 100 patients with HF (64 men, 36 women). To gather research material used the socio-demographic questionnaire and two standardized research tools: questionnaire SF-36 and the AIS scale. Patients were enrolled in a NYHA functional class based on data gathered from medical records. Considered statistically significant at p < 0.05 Resluts. There was a significant positive correlation between the NYHA scale, and the physical dimension (R = 0.406; p < 0.001) mental quality of life (R = 0.370; p < 0.001), and an index of quality of life (R = 0.410; p < 0.001) and significant inverse correlation between the scale values of acceptance of the disease and the physical dimension (R = -0.292; p = 0.003) and mental quality of life (R = -0.400; p < 0.001), and an index of quality of life (R = -0.323; p = 0.001). Multiple regression analysis showed that higher NYHA class and lower levels of AIS are independent determinants of decreased quality of life. Conclusions. Higher values NYHA scale and lower level of acceptance of the disease are independent determinants of lower quality of life. NYHA scale value exert a stronger influence on the physical dimension of quality of life and overall quality of life, and the degree of acceptance of the disease on the mental dimension of quality of life.
